In sociologist Erin Cech’s newbook The Trouble with Passion, she writes about how the pursuit of stability, income and status, which economists used to presume motivated all jobseekers, has been overtaken by what she calls “the passion principle”.

Cech’s work features prominently in Andrew Hill’s opinion piece in the Financial Times, in which he talks about The Great Resignation and the fact that “people are fed up and burnt out. Freed from the daily grind, they are also out to find happiness and fulfillment in their new careers.
